Poem segment 1
III. Shared Weather
Two people leave the same conversation
carrying different meanings home.
One remembers kindness.
The other remembers hesitation
before the kindness arrived.
Still, enough overlaps
for connection to continue.
This fragile middle
holds entire societies together.
Shared references.
Common rituals.
Songs everyone knows
without remembering where they learned them.
Culture depends on repetition.
But repetition alone
turns living things into monuments.
Too much stability
and language stiffens.
A tradition repeated mechanically
begins sounding like shoes
on an empty gym floor.
Too much change
and everything scatters—
symbols detached from memory,
stories losing their roots.
So culture balances there,
between riverbank and floodwater,
remaining recognizable
while still moving.
