Poem In Third Person
They say love
is an obsolete organ that served
us once
when we still ate human flesh
it helped us to swallow
the difficult parts:
the angry eyes
the lying mouth the empty
heart
They cut flowers
for the dead
a week in advance
sign the register
complaining about people
who bring children
to a funeral
They will have the last word
and it will still not stick
in their throat
They will toss the final handful
of dirt upon the grave
They will walk away with a limp
They will mumble to themselves
They knew you'd never make it
