My Daughter's Goodbye
Her hand is small
fine white fingers
and behind her
trees are swaying
dust rises behind
my car
and she grows
smaller
framed
by my rear-view mirror
her hand now only
a blade of grass
swaying swaying
and I am thirsty
as the weeds
our dirt road coats
with powder
and my daughter
with such small hands
waves
until I lose sight
of all but my own
leaving
