The Work of Seeing
In the crowded hall, a boy folds
inward. You almost pass him by.
You almost believe you
have no time.
But something in you
feels the lean of him. You pause.
You ask how his dog is doing.
It is nothing, and it is everything.
He will carry your question
through the rest of his day, as if
someone left
the porch light on
just for him.
