The Weight of Small Things
The burro leans into her work, a sag
of dusk on her back, carrying not only
grain or wood, but the questions
no one hears:
What if I stop?
What if I stay?
Some mornings, she lifts
her head only for the hand
she hopes will come.
It doesn't always.
Still, she waits.
But today:
a warm voice, a soft pear.
Not much.
Just enough to make her laugh
in that quiet way that creatures do
when they remember
the world still sees them.
