July 11
California Hill
Under the powerline supports
planted single file against the sky
atop the grass,
ruts persist,
overgrown,
almost overtaken,
where hand carts bumped,
jarred and heaved up the incline,
powered
by feet discontent, determined,
dragging children, clothes iron ware,
quilts, a Bible,
seeds,
scraping three thousand miles west or to a
grave.
And the powerlines whip, chirp,
carry dispossessed voices
where they want to go,
and the brome and bluestem
and buffalo grasses together
possess the ruts, possess
me.
