Epilogue Prairie Benediction
Off the highland plateau
sandhills are sliced
into gullies
inside the hills
round stones tell of ancient
water
a farmer has left his father's Model-T
to slow the hill's erosion
an uprooted family of sage
waits inside
for the hubs to sprout new wheels
on top of the hill
a slow windmill turns, reaches
down and down
into the Ogallala aquifer trickles,
clear and sweet
into the water tank
drink eat
no other sound
no greater gesture
these stones to bread
this water to wine
