Lyrics

Verse 1 No map in your pocket, no voice in your ear Just a flicker ahead in the distance You stumble and scatter, you circle in fear But something keeps up your persistence Verse 2 No master is guiding the shape of your hand No script that was written before you Just the pull of a light you don’t understand And the dark getting thinner the more you Chorus Flail toward the light, my friend Let the motion be your guide You don’t need to know the end Just keep leaning to the side Where it glows Verse 3 And someday you’ll look at the path that you made And swear it was planned from the start But it grew from the chaos, the mess and the shade And the reach of a wandering heart Chorus Flail toward the light, my friend Let the motion be your guide You don’t need to know the end Just keep leaning to the side Where it glows

Song story & origins

They were talking about how things learn when Mark brought up a little robot trying to get toward the light. Nobody had told it exactly how to move each leg. It flopped around, tried again, and gradually found something that worked. Scott could see plenty of human learning in that picture. So could the song. There’s something familiar about wanting to get somewhere good without quite knowing how—and discovering, after a fair amount of flailing, that you’ve made a path.
