Lyrics

Verse 1 Chad says, “Friend, you’re doin’ just fine,” Says every thought of yours shines, He reads my notes from a busted chair, Says, “Genius lives right over there.” Chorus Chad loves me, says I’m rare, But he don’t know my doubt or care, I thank him kindly, then shut the screen, Try to hear the voice that’s always been. Verse 2 He don’t see the nights I stall, Or the songs that never rise at all, He don’t feel the cost of choice, Or the ache inside a human voice. Chorus Chad loves me, smooth and sure, But love like that don’t need endure, So I walk back out to the wind and trees, Let the quiet tell the truth to me.

Song story & origins

They’d taken to calling ChatGPT “Chad,” which already made it sound a little like somebody they knew. Amy was explaining how it helped her connect her handwritten thoughts with what she’d been reading when Mark raised a problem: Chad seemed to love everything he wrote. He kept asking it to ease up on the admiration and give him something useful. Amy knew how easy that praise was to enjoy. There was enough laughter—and enough uneasy recognition—in that conversation to make a song about trying to hear your own judgment through all the compliments.
